A Year Gone & the Vomiting of Words

Fri Jun 19, 2009, 11:52 AM
  • Mood: Confused
Well, it's depressing to know I am one year older. Like always, though, I will attempt to look at the bright side, so: at least I can now say "Damn teenagers," and not insult myself! But, even on the day of birth, most everything comes down to working and little play.

I have a wide variety of various projects I am working on at the moment but one of the greatest is that I am now working for OP Digital [link] with a variety of web coding projects. This is great news, both for the experience, contacts and the buff to my resume! But, with that, I've also decided I am crazy enough to start writing a book.

Definitely a long time project, the book will include insight to web design itself--since you see so many coding books, but a rare handful of design books. Unfortunately I can't release too many details, but the book will be a few years in the making, as I'm currently drawing experience from the industry and will most definitely have to keep adding to it. In the mean-time, I may also begin writing a book something like "Dummies guide to web design," but geared more towards a younger crowd that begins that venture in middle / high school. And then, of course, there is that idea for "How to draw Anthros", but... being that just as large of a project and most likely won't draw in as many sales, that will probably come later.

For now, that's what's coming and what's going, but soon I'll at least be able to call myself a college graduate and have a bachelor's degree under my arm.

Using your camera to get a black and white effect, in my opinion, is an incredibly bad idea. Because when you do that, you're leaving elements of your design up to something else, which is the LAST thing you want with the kind of designs you're doing. Plan it wisely and then finish it skillfully.

Look. Sarah, Myself, or even Jason Chan (A well known concept artist that works for Massive Black, a concept team known around the world,) could be the person you look up to. But, whomever you choose to look up to, you have to remember one thing: all of us, every single artist, ALWAYS has room to improve. None of us will ever sit there and tell you our artwork is perfect. If we did, we would have the attitude that leads to our downfall. But, despite how much we work hard to get further, we never tell ourselves "Well, my work isn't as good as theirs..." or "I'll never be that good..." (of which, it kind of seems to me like you are saying,) and instead, say "I'll keep practicing my ass off and I'll be that good one day,".

As long as we do that, we will reach our goals, whether it is next year or 20 years from now.

Also, don't try to make things PERFECT. They will never be perfect. So don't be disappointed when you finish and they are not. Just work hard to find new techniques and put them to use. Then allow your work to be critiqued as hard as possible without taking it personally, and you will grow tremendously.

My point with all of this is (and I'm a brutally honest person, so sorry): a low self esteem attitude, or relying on the praise of others to tell us our work is good, will assure that your work won't go anywhere. An artist must have a steady self esteem and be able to rely on themselves and our work will grow with us.
